MARGARET TCHENG WARE

About the Artist

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Margaret earned a B.A. from Wellesley College and an M.F.A in Modern Dance from the University of Utah. She was a dance teacher, performer and choreographer before she moved to San Francisco and discovered a passion for painting. As a result of this background she brings a finely trained eye and a keen sensitivity towards nuances in the expressive potential of the human figure to her art.

An academically trained realist painter, Margaret's work has already been recognized by several significant awards in the art world. As an art student, she won second prize for portraiture in the student division of The Artist's Magazine's annual competition. In 2006 another self-portrait won the Fredrix Canvas Award of Excellence in the Oil Painters of America's 15th National Juried Exhibition in Missoula, Montana. Her paintings have been chosen for numerous other prestigious juried exhibitions throughout the country.

Margaret’s work has appeared in The Artist’s Magazine. Additionally, Margaret's paintings are featured in two books from the publishers of International Artist: How Did You Paint That? 100 Ways to Paint Favorite Subjects, volume 1, and How Did You Paint That? 100 Ways to Paint People and Figures, volume 2.

Margaret is a member of Oil Painters of America, and the Portrait Society of America where she recently finished a three-year tenure in their Ambassador Outreach Program as California State Ambassador.

Artist Statement

My art is influenced first and foremost by my long and passionate involvement with dance. Years of training in classical ballet and modern dance were followed by a decade of university teaching, professional choreography and immersion in related performing arts. These experiences not only disciplined me, they helped shape my sensibilities and broadened my appreciation for the expressive richness of gesture and the way space can be shaped and colored by movement. Before, my canvas was the stage. Now I relish the challenge of bringing my vision to life on a two-dimensional surface.

I enjoy painting in oil, pastel and mixed media. Recently, I found myself coming full circle back to my first passion (dance). I am working on a series of paintings of dancers. In doing so, my wish and my goal is to capture those moments of magic, when the dancers create - for themselves and audience alike - that heightened sensation of existing in "a more vivid place".
