JUDY HUMMELL

About the Artist

Judy Hummell received her bachelor's and master's degrees in Anthropology at Idaho State University, Pocatello, and did field work on the Mohave language in the early 1970's under the auspices of the Survey of California Indian Languages, Berkeley. Pursuing her long-time interest in art, she obtained an MFA at the University of Georgia in 1980, with a thesis entitled "Line in Space." During the 1980's her work was shown in numerous national sculpture and fiber art group exhibitions. After moving to San Francisco in 1994, she changed direction from fiber art to clay. She continues to follow her fascination with the simplicity and elegance of form possible from hand built clay and with the beauty of color and pattern obtained through pit firing.

Artist Statement

Drawing inspiration from ancient and primitive pottery I use methods of the earliest potters for forming and firing clay. The microcosmic patterns of color are created on my pots by chance and reflect their singular journey though the elements: earth and water, wind and fire.
